Artist Inspiration : I am interested in the physical and psychological environments created by the other as caused by stigma, shame, and social expectation. Within a racial landscape, I consider the view of a brown body seen as inherently foreign in both familiar and unfamiliar spaces. My work centers this body and leans into these structures to bring a critical and at times humorous view to these constructed identities and subsequent environments. Utilizing ceramic sculpture, I take inspiration from cultural symbols and stereotypes to create exaggerated and abstracted forms that render racial stigma theories as absurd while magnifying the humanity of the othered body.
